This week, we sat down with illustrator Space Pup Silver to discuss superhero kinks and fetishes! We talked about his fascination with tropes, especially some of the wackier ones from the Silver Age of Comics, such as Red Kryptonite, conveyor belts, and humans kept in alien zoos. We also discussed how his illustration style has developed over time, as well as what inspires his art.
Introduction to Superhero Kinks
Silver says his Radioactive Spider Bite into Kink changes on a weekly basis, as he constantly has repressed memories popping up, but he went with the cartoon series Totally Spies this time around. He talks about his fascination with all of the latex in the show. Cartoons in general shaped him as a person, especially “monster of the week” tropes that don’t have a series-long plot.
Batman-related Superhero Kinks
We then dive into all of the fetish fuel in the 1966 Batman series, which heavily inspired both Dick and Silver’s kink/fetish interests. First we discuss the silly labels placed all over the show, which were used in order to make the scenes look more like a comic book panel. Silver loves both the campiness and the peril of the labels, as well as the show in general. We also talk about what a delight Adam West’s energy was. Dick brings up a scene where Catwoman traps Batman and Robin in a room with a floor that slowly heats up, and how Catwoman cracks an egg to cook on the floor. Dick and Silver talk about how the show just wouldn’t be the same without cartoonish aspects like this. Lexi then brings up how the campy, silly aspects of superhero kinks get at the core of what “play” really means.
Zoltar Machine Fetish
We talk about Silver’s wide variety of niche and specific kinks, including Zoltar machines. He loves the visual trope of giving wish granting a new physical form, and he likes the funfair attraction elements of them. Dick brings up an episode of The Twilight Zone in which two people are at a diner and one of them puts a dime in a fortune telling machine. The character becomes obsessed because the fortune telling machine keeps giving him cryptic messages. Dick really likes the idea of someone’s fate being tied to an otherworldly non-human object. Another reason Silver enjoys Zoltar machines is because he identifies as asexual and a visual kinkster, therefore he needs something stunning to look at in order to feel a connection to it.
Conveyor Belt Fetish
We also discuss conveyor belts and the peril that often goes along with them in the media. Besides just peril, Dick is also attracted to the machinery involved with conveyor belts, and finds them arousing to look at. Silver really likes the movie Ice Pirates, specifically a scene where men are being turned into mindless servants. In the transformation process, then men are being taken through the different steps on a conveyor belt. He also used to watch a game show as a kid called The Generation Game, and there was a segment where the contestants had to name as many items that they saw go by on a conveyor belt as possible. Additionally, he’s fascinated by the idea of a factory process.
Being a Fetish Illustrator
We then go into fetish art, and how there isn’t a lot of fetish illustration that features humans out there. Silver really got into creating fetish art when a documentary came out in the UK called Secret Life of the Human Pups, which helped bring puppy play to the public consciousness. He drew fan art related to the documentary, and suddenly a lot of fetishists asked if he could draw them. His style has evolved a lot since then as he explores his own concepts and themes.
